Many first time web site owners feel unconfort dealing with the domain name and how to buy them. They're often confused about when domain names should be considered, often not knowing its value. The trick for the majority of first time web site owners is figuring out whether or not domain name comes with a web site and if not, how to buy domain name?

Services such as domain name registration and web hosting are seperate but often bundled together. It is like buying a car and an insurance in the same car lot, in that if you buy domain name, you're often upsold to buy web hosting. Similarly, web hosting companies often guide you to purchasing a domain name for their web hosting service you get. It is like getting the tea for your water and sugar to make real good tea.

Buying either the web hosting service, or the buying the domain name can blur the line between the two. Although web hosting companies are often not domain registrars themselves. So they sub contract other companies who do the domain registration for them from whom they sub lease the domain name you purchase from them. But because you don't have to go to two different companies to get what you need, the whole process appears as one to you.

How does domain name registration work?

The biggest myth about domain names is that they cost the same everywhere you go to buy domain name. In fact, the prices vary from around $6 to about $30. That is why it is better to first shop around for domain name before committing to a hosting company, since you'll probably buy domain name from them.

Often companies that solely sell domains, with no web hosting solutions, are the cheapest to buy domains from. For example, companies like enom.com and nameadmin.com sell domains for under $7. Where as directnic.com will sell the same domain name for a whopping $30.00. The difference is that the former pair will only sell you domain names, then allow you to transfer them to your own web hosting solution provider, where the latter will try and bundle the two services in one and charge you a hefty price for the convenience.

I personally work with bluehost.com which is very popular among my clients and people in their circle. With Bluehost, you can buy domain names for $10.00 USD. It is not cheap in that respect, but the convenience of buying domain name right in your hosting account is usually worth the extra few bucks. Besides, they also provide services such as "parked domain names" and "mirror" domain name which can direct web traffic to your web site for a few dollars. Parked or mirror domains are not separate websites; they simply point to an existing website of your own, but are the result of additional services that come with my Bluehost account free of charge.

Having the additional services such as parked and mirror for your domain names is not always free. Unlike Bluehost.com many other companies will charge you setup and/or monthly fees for parked domains.

The fundamentals of domain management begin with two basic methods of directing domain names to your website. That is, the process that gets a surfer from the browser to your website involves a mechanism that takes the surfer (unbeknownst to him) to your domain name registrar and then to your website. The journey from your registrar to your website can be accomplished by one of two methods -- "pointing" or "forwarding." It's your choice as to which method to use.

Other options you're like to ask for in buying domain name - or burchasing web hosting solution - include "pointing" or "forwarding." These allow you manage your domain names and are the main methods of getting the domain names to work on your web hosting account, and/or your web site. It is basically how you get a domain name attached to a web site, or web folder on a hosting account.

The forwarding and pointing methods of directing domain name to your web site (files and and folders and their structure of additional data and links) work a bit like an address to your house of a physical location. For pointing, a Domain Name Server address (DNS) that your web hosting company provides you is assigned to your domain name. This is easily done from your web hosting account at your particular registrar.

"Forwarding" is a bit diffirent. Let's say you wanted to set up somchat.com for your website. Instead of using the DNS method described above, you would simply "forward" it to grumpy.com, which would already be pointing to your website. This is also a feature of the hosting account and be availed right from the domain name options.

I know some registrars charge extra for features such as "forwarding." But be aware that there's no need to pay extra even for this. Many registrars, like directnic.com include forwarding and other features at no extra charge.

So, even if you are not interested in managing your domain names for yourself -that is you let your webdev team do the dirty work - you can still save some money on buying domain name by shopping around, asking the right questions and consulting professionals. It is however, easiest to just compare domain name registrars before committing to web hosting solutions.
